ALS is a laser-safety feature that turns off the local transmit laser when a fault such as loss of signal is detected on the receive side, protecting technicians from accidental exposure to the optical beam during fiber work. For example, if a technician disconnects the far-end fiber on this SDH link and near-end ALS is enabled, this interface's own laser shuts off automatically rather than continuing to emit into an open connector.
