This field specifies the OSPF link cost for an interface, ranging from 0 to 65535. An admin tunes this value to influence OSPF's shortest-path calculation, making a preferred path look cheaper so it's chosen over an alternate route. Raising the cost on a lower-bandwidth backup link ensures OSPF only uses it if the primary, lower-cost path fails.
