This raw byte counter is the basic building block for calculating this interface's actual received throughput and utilization over any time window, by taking the difference between two samples and dividing by the elapsed time. For example, comparing this counter's value at the start and end of a business day on a 10GbE client port carrying a customer's Ethernet handoff lets an admin calculate the average inbound bit rate the link carried and compare it against its rated capacity.
