This OID counts, in events, how many physical-layer symbol errors have been detected on inbound traffic received by this 100 Gbps Ethernet (100GbE) interface. Symbol errors happen below the packet level, in the line encoding itself, so a rising count points to a physical-layer problem such as a marginal optical signal or a bad connector on the receive path, even before it shows up as dropped or CRC-errored packets. For example, if a 100GbE line-side interface on a data-center-interconnect (DCI) link starts accumulating inbound symbol errors right after a maintenance window, the operator would suspect a technician left a receive connector slightly loose or dirty rather than a software or configuration issue.
