This counter records packets received on this data link layer that were discarded because of an unknown or unsupported protocol. An administrator uses a rising count here to detect traffic arriving in a protocol this node isn't configured to handle, which could indicate a misconfigured neighboring device. For example, a steady stream of unknown-protocol discards would prompt the admin to check what protocol a neighboring device is actually sending versus what this node expects.
