This read-only value gives a quick description of the kind of router link a given LSA entry represents: a point-to-point link, a transit network, a stub network, or a virtual link. An admin uses this to know how to interpret the accompanying link ID and link data fields for that entry. For example, an entry marked stubNetwork tells the admin this link entry describes a network with no other routers attached, rather than a router-to-router adjacency.
