This matters because preshared-key authentication is generally weaker, a single shared secret rather than per-user certificates, so an admin auditing remote-access security posture uses this field to spot sessions still relying on preshared-key auth that should have been migrated to certificate-based authentication. Example: discovering a batch of active sessions with raTunnelAuthMethod reporting preshared-key(1) after a company mandate to move to certificates reveals which users' clients still haven't been reconfigured.
