This is the high-order 32 bits of a 64-bit counter tracking ATM cells encoded (compressed) on side A. Network engineers use this combined with the matching low-order value to see total traffic processed through the variable-bit-rate encoder on the A path. A high portion value of 5, paired with a low portion, represents traffic counts exceeding 2 billion cells.
