Network engineers track this to identify compromised keys, misconfigured credentials, or man-in-the-middle attacks disrupting IPSec tunnels. A sudden spike—such as increasing from 5 to 50 within an hour—might indicate a peer's private key has been compromised or its certificate renewed without proper distribution to your gateway.
