An admin watches this to determine whether inbound loss from a specific site is occurring at this appliance rather than upstream. For example, a rise in receive-direction dropped bytes on a VPath while the corresponding send-direction counter stays flat suggests a local buffering or capacity issue at this end handling traffic arriving from that site.
