SMS alerts via a GSM modem enable text message notifications using a GSM modem or mobile phone connected to your computer. This alert method offers exceptional reliability for reporting system outages or significant application performance issues. SMS delivery remains unaffected by network conditions or internet service provider availability, ensuring notifications even during internet or mail server disruptions. A GSM modem can be a standalone device with a serial, USB, or Bluetooth interface, or a cell phone with modem functionality.
This SMS alert feature is available in all IPNetwork Monitor editions, including the
trial version.
To utilize a GSM modem with IPNetwork Monitor, install the appropriate modem driver on the monitoring server or workstation. Typically, the driver is included on the CD/disk provided with the modem/phone or available from the manufacturer’s website. If unavailable, the standard Windows modem driver may suffice. IPNetwork Monitor supports using two GSM modems for enhanced reliability; the secondary modem is utilized if the primary modem fails to send a message. Either modem can be enabled or disabled as needed.
After configuring and testing the GSM modem/phone with IPNetwork Monitor, you can create SMS alerts. Multiple phone numbers can be designated as recipients. By default, the SMS message details the monitor triggering the alert, the time of the state change, and includes a link to a summary report.
To activate SMS alerts for a specific monitor, add an alert to the corresponding alerting rule. Configure the alert for specific state changes and define a schedule. For instance, restrict alerts to business hours or conversely, only outside working hours. Multiple SMS alerts can be added to a single alerting rule.
