Is it possible to monitor network speed?
Can network speed be tracked?
Q: I want to know if it’s possible to observe network performance. Specifically, I’d like to configure an alert that notifies me if the ping response time exceeds a certain threshold (X ms), so I’m aware of any potential network slowdowns. Is this achievable with your software? If so, could you explain how to set up such a monitor?
A: Yes. Begin by selecting a server (host) to ping for measuring network speed. You’ll need its DNS name or IP address. Then, refer to the instructions at Help: Add Monitor to create a PING monitor for that host.
After creating the monitor, you’ll need to define threshold values for triggering alerts. IPNetwork Monitor sends alerts when a monitor’s state changes, so you must configure IPNetwork Monitor to transition the monitor to a Warning state when the response time surpasses X ms. To accomplish this, select the newly created monitor in the TreeView and navigate to the monitor’s State Conditions tab. Add a *Warning State Conditions* section, set the Response Time Limit, and click *Save*.
IPNetwork Monitor defaults to sending an email alert when a monitor enters a Warning state. You can specify the recipient email address on the Email Settings page of the Settings dialog (accessible via the “Settings” button on the toolbar).
