IPNetwork Monitor enables you to evaluate and track the performance metrics of network proxies. A built-in MIB browser lets you choose which parameters to monitor, providing access to all proxy-supported variables, their current readings, and descriptions from MIBs.
A network proxy, or network proxy server, is a server (a computer system or application) that acts as an intermediary for requests directed to external resources. Proxies can be categorized by their function as:
- tunneling proxies, or gateways, which relay unaltered data as is
- forwarding proxies, which retrieve data from the Internet and transmit it to the client
- reverse proxies, which route requests from external sources to another server (typically within the same network)
Proxy servers are commonly employed to manage traffic flow, perform accounting and monitoring, bypass access limitations, and/or offer a degree of anonymity when accessing online resources.
Reverse proxies are frequently utilized to delegate request handling to a different application (for instance, an Apache Web server managing dynamic content while Nginx serves static content). Other common applications of reverse proxies include load distribution, harmful content filtering, data compression, and more.
Typical Proxy Monitoring Scenarios
In addition to collecting standard system health information and conducting basic availability checks, monitoring proxies can be used for:
- confirming proxy service operation (e.g., if the proxy functions as a load balancer, ensuring it correctly distributes incoming requests)
- compiling statistics (and taking action if predefined limits are exceeded)
- issuing alerts if usage statistics indicate an approaching quota limit
List of MIBs Employed for Monitoring Proxy Devices
A list of some MIBs used to monitor proxy devices follows:- CISCO-PROXY-CONTROL-MIB This MIB module augments the IETF Dial Control MIB (RFC2128) by furnishing Proxy management data.
- CISCO-SSL-PROXY-CAPABILITY This MIB module includes agent capabilities for the CISCO-SSL-PROXY-MIB.
- CISCO-SSL-PROXY-MIB This MIB module is designed for administering a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) Proxy device that terminates and optimizes SSL and Transport Layer Security (TLS) processes.
- H323FILTER-MIB This MIB module defines management objects for the Microsoft H323 Proxy Filter.
- PROXY-MIB Proxy MIB defined for general management of proxy devices.
- SNMP-PROXY-MIB This MIB module specifies MIB objects that offer methods to remotely configure the settings employed by a proxy forwarding application.
